East London Swimmers
Since 2006 the London Fields Lido has re-opened. This open-air public pool situated in Hackney’s north west has become one of the most important place for many locals. Indeed for some of them, this public pool is a refuge from the hyperactive city life.
The photographer Madeleine Waller has recorded the stories of some of these people who usually come to this pool.
By taking a picture of them dressed for normal life and in their swimming gear combined with a personal quote, this book brought together people by their shared passion for swimming with a real intimate feeling.
One of the most touching quote is probably Nick’s story:
“I got into swimming after getting caught up in the tsunami in Thailand. I was on a family holiday when the wave came in and I managed to grab my son from his pram and leg it up a hill. I looked back and saw the pram disappear. When I returned home I had a fear of open water so I entered a race in Lake Windermere and my passion for long distance swimming was born. Last year I swam from Spain to Morocco. Next I’m swimming from Robben Island to Cape Town.”
