We’ve found a few of the hottest spots to cool off this summer that are slightly off the beaten path, but won’t leave you disconnected.
For The Wine Lover
Less populated than its busy brother Napa, St. Helena offers more variation in topography and therefore more spectacular views. With Michelin starred restaurants, amazing wines, and luxury spas and hotels – you really can design your own ideal vacation here each day. With unique wine properties like Pride Mountain, Joseph Phelps, & VGS Chateau Potelle there are options for every palate. Bring a bottle with you to our favorite spot for a low key and delicious dinner – the upscale gastropub Goose & Gander. And, at a mere 90 minute gorgeous ride from the San Francisco or Oakland airports, you can be back in the city or on to your next destination with ease.
For The Foodie
Olive oil tastings? Fresh tapas? Inventive wine bars? If that sounds like a great way to kick off your weekend, Saugatuck, Michigan might make its way to the top of your list. Set on the beautiful coastline of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck boasts both a temperate summer climate & a thriving foodie culture. With a host of unique shops, art galleries, and adorable cottages, it feels more like a rom-com movie set than a typical hamlet. And, less than two hours from either Detroit or Chicago it’s easy to add on to your next Midwestern round of meetings. Rent a boat for the day and enjoy other nearby coastal towns like Holland and Grand Haven, as well. There are festivals throughout the Summer, so you’re sure to find something special to celebrate!
For The Beach Bum
If sitting on a quiet beach with nothing to do is your idea of a vacation, North Topsail Beach may be your style. Just a quick 30 minute flight from the large airline hub of Charlotte, NC lies tranquility. Populated largely with private rental homes, this family destination has a very different vibe than its more commercial cousin Myrtle Beach, SC. Be sure to stop at the grocery on the way out to the beach for some fresh shrimp, seasonal veggies, & supplies so you won’t need to leave your island paradise for a while. Rental cars are recommended as you won’t find plentiful ride share services. You may want to play a round of mini golf or visit a restaurant or two during your stay. But, this relaxing venue is all about sun, sand, and the sound of the ocean.
For The History Buff
If binge watching The Gilded Age is your guilty pleasure, then Newport, Rhode Island may be ideal for your next New England summer getaway. Home to “cottages” for some of the most influential and powerful American leaders of the late 19th century, Newport has a glittering and storied past. While many wealthy residents still enjoy its beautiful beaches and mild sunny summer climate, the homes of the Vanderbilts and the Astors are now under the care of The Preservation Society of Newport County. Tours are available periodically and offer a glimpse into a grander time. For those looking for a place to take in the view of all its natural beauty, stop by The Lawn at The Castle Inn for a cocktail or brunch. Only two hours from Boston Logan Airport, you’ll have plenty of time to make your early evening flight.
For The Outdoor Lover
A little over an hour from the Denver airport is a quaint mountain town that has a little something for everyone and a whole lot of natural beauty. With a walkable downtown full of breweries, shops, and restaurants, and a thriving art scene you could easily enjoy a weekend without ever leaving town. But, the outdoor options are just as diverse. With spots for fly fishing, cycling, rafting, and paddling all readily available you can try your hand at almost anything. Tours are available that make these sports more accessible even for novices. For those looking for a little less adventure, you’ll find horseback riding, birdwatching, & even hot air balloons from which you can survey some of the city’s over 50 parks and 200 trails.
Wherever you find yourself this Summer, we hope you enjoy some well earned rest. And, remember to live Your Life; Your Way.
